Coalition Delivers First Material Grants to Nashville and Philadelphia

This past month marked a big milestone for music education in Nashville and Philadelphia. We’ve made our initial grants to both school districts, supporting a range of music programming and teacher professional development.

Committing to Teacher Professional Development

We’re thrilled to report that on December 1, the NAMM Foundation made its first grant exclusively for teacher development in both cities. They will be providing funding to let Philadelphia music teachers participate in events like Little Kids Rock Modern Band Summit, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Conference, Conn-Selmer’s Institute, South by Southwest EDU, and NAMM 2019. Additionally, funding will also open opportunities for professional development in the areas of modern band, the music industry, and recording, songwriting, and crafting a culturally relevant curriculum.

In Nashville, elementary and secondary music educators will have access to software licenses, books, and online resources to help them improve their use of music technology like digital recording and production. They’ll also gain access to webinars and in-person training, including a Music Technology Summer Institute focusing on the use of technology in the music classroom.

Here’s a quick summary of more Coalition activities in Philadelphia and Nashville:

  • We’re hiring a program coordinator to work with the school system and all our music education partners working with young people in Philadelphia.
  • We’ve also made a substantial investment to update and expand a commercial music curriculum, working with the DASH program and Philadelphia music and audio industry leaders, including Recording Academy national trustee and GRAMMY winner, Ivan Barias. We kicked off the program recently at Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion High School.
  • We’ve made an investment supporting a new recording studio in the Nashville School of the Arts and the Country Music Association and artist Hunter Hayes.
  • Our community of supporters continues to grow. In the past month, we’ve received support from and made connections with the NAMM Foundation, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA), LIVE Nation Urban, the Neubauer Family Foundation, the Recording Academy, and WXPN’s World Cafe Live
